Dr. Sketchy's is what happens when cabaret meets art school ...

We comb London to find the most beautiful burlesque dancers, the most bizarre circus freaks, and the most rippling hunks of man. Then we let you draw them for three hours. Interspersed with posing are ridiculous drawing contests (best left handed drawing? Best incorporation of a woodland animal?) where you can win alcohol and fancy art supply prizes.

Dr.Sketchy's was started in New York in 2005 by illustrator and performer Molly Crabapple, and there are now branches all over the world !

Distressing news from the organiser of Dr.Sketchy in Portland, Maine :

“Hi Molly,

We’ve had a pretty upsetting event happen this past weekend here in Portland–my September model was attacked. Two men approached him around midnight on Friday, and started saying homophobic slurs to him, and then proceeded to beat him enough to concuss him and cause bleeding of the brain. You can read more about it here: http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/032723.html

This is, of course, very scary and outrageous. Already, local Portland queers and artists alike have rallied around what happened, and are doing their best to organize and educate, and the police are searching for the attackers.

A close friend of our model has created a website — healportland.com — to let people know about our model’s status, donate money (since he has no healthcare), and leave well-wishing messages. I was wondering if it would be possible to send this out to the Sketchy’s list, so we could, at minimum, let our art community know what has happened.

Thanks,
Katie

If this story has touched you as much as it touched me, then I strongly urge all of you to help in anyway you can. Im sure that any support or help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. X

And also ... !

Exciting news! Molly Crabapple recently wrote a panel called "DIY Empires: Taking Your Online Following Offline," It's about movements like Dr. Sketchy's that, despite being started by creative folks with low budgets, have spread all over the world.

There's a killer lineup! My fellow panelists would be Chris Baty (founder of National Novel Writing Month) Emily Bristow (Austin Coordinator forf National Novel Writing Month) and Jenny Hart (one of the founders of the Craft Mafia) moderated by Lux Alptraum (editor of Boinkology)

The panel's for presentation at SXSWi (South by Southwest Interactive), an international conference about digital technology and its effect on culture.

She's got past the first round, and now her fate is in part decided by voting...
